SPORTS
Serena Williams falls short in Australian Open final
Danielle Elliot
January 30, 2016
MELBOURNE, Australia – Angelique Kerber had the support of the crowd at Rod Laver Arena on Saturday night. After just more than two hours on court, she also had the Australian Open title.
Kerber defeated No. 1 Serena Williams 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. It is Kerber's first Grand Slam title, and the first for a German player in this century.
Kerber, who at 28 and in her 14th year on tour was playing in her first Grand Slam final, opened the match by breaking the 21-time champion's serve, then held to put Williams in a 2-0 hole. She left too many shots suspended in Kerber's reach, and Kerber placed winners just inside the lines.
Williams showed vintage form in the second, playing the aggressive style that had helped her advance this far without dropping a set in the fortnight. The match went to a deciding third.
The crowd went wild as Kerber broke Williams in the first game of the set. There was far less applause when Williams broke right back.
It was odd to hear the stadium so in favor of Kerber. Australian tennis fans are famous for loving the underdog – but Williams has long said this is a stadium where she feels the most love.
Williams told the press Thursday that she was surprised to be playing in the final here. After winning this and two other major titles last year, she took four months off from the sport to recover from a crushing loss in the U.S. Open semifinals. She expected to have a slow start, she said. Yet she didn't drop a set en route to the final.
The deciding game came with Kerber leading 3-2 in the third. The first-time finalist built a 40-love advantage on Williams's serve. Williams fought all the way back to deuce, then took the advantage. But she failed to close it out. It went back to deuce five times.
The entire stadium now seemed to be in Kerber's corner. Still, when Williams double-faulted to give Kerber another advantage, there was silence more than celebration. Perhaps it was confusion. Williams double-faulted three times in the set. That point was one of the most important in the match. Kerber took the 4-2 lead on the next point. She held to 5-2.
Williams refused to go down quietly. With Kerber serving for the match, Williams broke in five points. If she held serve, she'd push the match to 5-all. She let Kerber have the first two points, then rattled off three straight. It went to deuce. Kerber was two points from closing out the match. Kerber earned advantage as Williams shanked a forehand into the net. And on the next point, she did what many had thought was impossible.
Kerber had come within one point of being knocked out in the first round here. Her quarterfinal win over Victoria Azerenka marked the first time she'd ever beaten Vika. Now she was champion.
"I had really crazy two weeks," she said after the match. "This is the first big tournament of the year, and I won it, the first Grand Slam. It sounds crazy, but I can say I'm a Grand Slam champion now."
Had Williams won, she would have been even with Steffi Graf at the top of all-time titles in the Open Era. She has been at 21 titles since winning at Wimbledon last year. As soon as it ended, she walked to Kerber's side of the net and offered a hug, managing to look genuinely happy for Kerber. They walked halfway off the court with Williams's arm linked around Kerber's back.
"I was actually really happy for her," Williams said later. "She played so well today. She had an attitude that I think a lot of people can learn from: just to always stay positive and to never give up. I was really inspired by that. So honestly, she's a really good girl. If I couldn't win, I'm happy she did."

Learn English English

English was already a world language by the time I turned 10 in 1991. Its study was mandatory. I struggled at first. I didn’t like the teacher, grammar explanations confused me, and the material was monotone. I thought I’d never learn it. Then my parents decided to hire a private English tutor. I was 13 and she was wonderful. She didn’t simply instruct me in the language, but helped me discover it - she set me on the right path to learning and, most importantly, learning to love language.
I started reading a lot of books in English. My aunt bought me The Hardy Boys for my birthday and after that there was no looking back. The combination of reading books, watching movies every day and talking to my tutor once a week for two years worked wonders. By the age of 15 I was fluent in English and in possession of a thick American accent.

How Learning 11 Languages Taught Me 11 Crucial Lessons

This article is a wake-up call for all those who dream of becoming multilingual: just do it! Luca Lampariello talks about where he finds the motivation for learning languages, and how he’s learned 11 so far.

By Luca Lampariello

When people meet someone who speaks many languages fluently, the first reaction is often one of slight bewilderment. Multilingualism is generally considered cool yet difficult to achieve, especially if second, third and fourth languages are acquired later in life. As an advocate of language learning, I of course agree that it’s cool, but I challenge the assumption that it’s difficult.
My name is Luca Lampariello. Here I would like to deviate from the well-trodden route to how I learned 11 languages and concentrate on why I learned these languages. Seasoned language learners will all tell you that motivation is fundamental, so where can one find this motivation and how can it be bolstered?
Language learning is about much more than heaps of books and hours of study. It’s about traveling to marvelous places, meeting inspiring people, enjoying delicious food and embarking on innumerable journeys of self-discovery. I derive my motivation to learn more languages from these experiences; the experiences that these languages make possible.

Davido Denies Artiste Under His Label

Story by Nathan Nathaniel Ekpo/Nigeriafilms.com

Last Updated: Monday, January 11, 2016
There seems to be some internal trouble going on Davido’s HKN camp as the singer has just come out to reveal artistes under his label.
Davido stated that aside Danagod, B-Red and Sina Rambo, any other artiste is not signed under his label and has his own cross to carry.
He pointed that he should not be held responsible for the well being of any other person under the label aside those who are working for him.
According to him, “Danagod, B-Red, Sina Rambo HKN. If I didn't mention your name you are not signed to me and I'm not liable for your life, you know yourself.”
When he was asked about Olu and Shizzi, the singer cleared the air that “Olu is signed as my Dj not artist. Olu is HKN,” while noting that “Shizzi is HKN 100 percent ! Shizzi basically made HKN who we are today.”
But with this sudden news, fans are now asking questions about singer, Deekay, who has been parading himself as artiste being signed under the label and has been seen moving and promoting the label for some time now.
But Davido though never mentioned his name, has been avoiding questions about the faith of the singer under his label.
He also revealed that he will soon be revealing his new artiste which he just signed unto his label soon noting that if he does not win Headies Next rated, he is going display worst scenario on the organizers.
“I'm rich, can’t wait to show the world my new artist and if they ever do Headies again and he doesn't win next rated I am going to pull worse than a Kanye,” he said.

Public Display: Dele Momodu shows off assets

Many celebrities are fond of displaying their latest acquisitions on social networks. In general, they update fans about their assets, whereabouts and lots more.
Well many of us cannot do without mobile phone in running our day-to-day activities, and some of us have within the range of two to three phones with different mobile network.
some days ago, Ovation Boss, Dele Momodu decided to let his fans into his day to day activities as he posted a picture of his mobile phones which amounted to eight .
It’s funny to see such in this century where we have lots of phones with dual Sims, all I just keep imagining is, when the eight phones rings at a stretch how would he pick them ? Does he have a P.A that carries these mobile phones around? Alternatively, he could be into import and export of mobile phones that he is yet to disclose to fans.   puiblish  by. lanre olatunji blog spot

Finally, Blackface Reveals What He Wants from 2Baba

Story by Nathan Nathaniel Ekpo/Nigeriafilms.com

Last Updated: 11 hours ago
The crisis currently being witnessed in the Nigerian entertainment industry is taking a new turn as the day goes by and while some issues are being put to rest, some are beginning to come up.
Latest of such issues has been the allegation of song theft between Blackface and 2Baba and Wizkid.
Blackface who has been in the news lately over the allegation feels 2Baba whom they have been together from day one is not treating him fairly after making hits with some of his works.
Not being specific about some of the songs, during an interview with TVC morning programme, Your View, monitored by Nigeriafilms.com, where he was a celebrity guest, the singer stated that he does not want anything from 2Baba but just simple acknowledgment either from him or any other person using his works.
In his words, “2face feels I am someone you can trample upon. I am one person that have thought these guys how to be a good song writer and thought them the rudiments of music, yet they will just see one as nothing. I am not expecting anything from 2face just simple credits. Just like when Kennis music signed him, they did ‘African Queen’ and I was not given credit and that took them time.”
Blackface was later advised that rather than continually have issues with artistes over song theft, he should rather make it a business whereby he writes and give the likes of Omawumi to sing but he was not comfortable with the idea as he cleared the air that he is not a freelance writer.
“No. There are people we call freelance writer and I am not such a person. I have people I am writing for and then I know we have an agreement together so I can’t just write song for anybody,” he added.

Former rapper and record label boss, Lanre ‘eLDee The
Don’ Dabiri, might be returning to music after taking a
break from the industry.
The ‘I go yarn’ rapper had almost stopped releasing
music, retiring from the art, and channeling his time to
tech entereprenuership, which has led to the
establishment of his tech company – MyPlayData.
During his time, eLDee ran Trybes Men and Trybe
Records, a label that was responsible gfor the
considerable success of a number of stars including
Sasha, 2Shotz, Dr SID, Blaise, Freestyle and Kaboom .
But Olamide might have started what could lead to an
eLDee return to music in Nigeria.
On Sunday, January 17, the YBNL boss tweeted about
wanting to collaborate with the ace musician and the
response was pretty positive from eLDee The Don.
In 2015, eLDee dabbled into music making, featuring on
Sheyman’s single, ‘King in my area’ » , and he also
released an introspective single titled ‘It ain’t all bad’. »
Speaking on his current music situation, the singer said,
“I get a lot of messages daily, from fans requesting new
eLDee music and while I have chosen a new path, I
understand that I did not choose music, music chose
me. I have recorded something for the true fans of
eLDee and I hope they enjoy it. This is NOT an attempt to
come out of retirement, I am doing this to reciprocate
the constant love I have enjoyed from fans, during and
after my music career,”

Odunlade Adekola is one of the most popular Yoruba
movie actors in the Nollywood Movie Industry.
After surfacing in the Nigerian Yoruba movie industry
some years ago, Odunlade Adekola has since become
a household name, as the tall, handsome actor has
won the hearts of many Yoruba movie watchers both
in Nigeria and beyond.
Biography:
He was born on December 31st, 1977, in Abeokuta,
Ogun State, Nigeria. He attended the Saint John RCM
primary school, and later Saint Peter’s college, both
in Abeokuta. Odunlade Adekola started acting at a
very early age. According to him, whenever any
anniversary was to hold in his church (the Christ
Apostolic Church, Lafenwa, Abeokuta), he and a
friend, named “Tunde”, would request to play jesters,
and this request was always granted.
Career:
He wrote a “script” for a comedy play involving just
two characters (him and his friend). That was how it
all began for this professional actor, director and
producer.
After being motivated by the likes of Taiwo Hassan
(ogogo), Adebayo Salami (oga bello), Lere Paimo, and
other genius Yoruba actors in Nollywood, he entered
the professional scene in 2005.
However, he started increasing popularity only in
2007. He received training and additional motivation
from late Isola Durojaye (Alasari), who believed in his
potential and assisted him in bringing out the best in
him.
Odunlade Adekola's Movies:
Odunlade Adekola has featured in almost 70 Yoruba
movies. He admitted that the film Asiri gomina wa, in
which he played the role of a state governor, was the
most challenging assignment of his career, as
criticisms and doubts flew about over his ability to
play the role successfully. According to him, he
believes that this role opened up the door of many
greater opportunities for him. Odunlade Adekola has
written and produced about six movies:
Farapamo
Emi nire kan
Baba super
Ila owo
Eje fun eje
Fayebora.
Odunlade Adekola’s family and private life:
One of the most asked questions about Odunlade
Adekola is “Is Odunlade Adekola married?” Well, for
your information, the tall, handsome actor is legally
married to Ruth with three kids.
The wife of Nigerian actor Odunlade Adekola, Mrs

admitted that there existed a relationship between
her and the actor. However, the duo had to part ways
as he was not willing to take a second wife, and of
course, she had to carry on with her life. The breakup
notwithstanding, the duo is still on very good terms.
Apart from being an actor, Kola, as he is well known
by fans, is also a Glo ambassador.

his first album, in 2012; he went on to release
another album titled YBNL. The album had several hit
singles like ‘First of All’, ‘Voice of the street’, ‘Ilefo
Iluminati’ ‘Stupid love’ ‘Durosoke’ and ‘Owotabua’.
Once again, the album which featured several major
Nigerian artistes like Tiwa Savage, Dammy Krane,
Kayswitch, Samklef, Davido and a couple of up and
coming artistes, was well received.
Another album titled “Baddest Guy Ever Liveth’ was
released in 2013 which featured hit singles like
‘Anifowose’ ‘Story for the Gods’ and ‘Yemi my Lover’
and in 2014, he released his latest album, Street OT,
in which he featured Don Jazzy for ‘Skelemba’ and
Viktoh for ‘Up in the Club.
One attribute that has helped Olamide stay afloat in
his musical career is his ability to stay away from
scandals and his strong work ethic. This is evident in
the number of albums he has been able to release
within a short time of launching his musical career.
Olamide has been nominated for several national and
international awards, some of which include Artiste
of the Year, Best Rap Album, Album of the Year, Best

Apart from being a good musician and rapper,
Olamide is also a father. He fathered a son with his
long time girlfriend Adebunkunmi Aisha Suleiman.
The christening ceremony had many high profile
Nigerians and Celebrities in attendance, including the
immediate past Governor of Lagos state, Babatunde
Raji Fashola. The couple is rumored to be expecting
baby number 2.

Thugs Beat Up Ward Chairman At The
Home APC Leader

Unknown thugs invaded the home of Ehisco Matthew,
the All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, at Benoni,
Government Reservation Area, Benin City on Monday,
January 18.
The suspected thugs who also beat up a ward
chairman, were said to have learnt that Matthew had
connived with some ward leaders in the party and
shifted their usual meetings held at the party’s
secretariat in Orionmwon to his house with the
intension of engaging in some shady deals, The
Nation reports.
Having learnt of the meeting, they decided to invade
the place and disrupt the proceeding of the meeting.
When Evbuosi ward chairman, Okoro Sylvester
wanted to gain entrance into the place of the
meeting, he was prevented from doing so. He was
given the beating of his life and got his clothes torn
to pieces.

Recounting what happened, Sylvester said: “ It was
yesterday we got a message that we will be having a
meeting today in our party’s chairman’s house. So,
we said ok, what is the time? They said 10am this
morning. I could not go back yesterday because we
were still having another meeting in Benin. So I had
to pass the night here in Benin.
“Getting back this morning, I got prepared and parked
my pathfinder jeep somewhere. Coming in, I saw
people chasing me out saying I should not come into
the house. I asked what is happening? This a
meeting. They called that the whole ward chairmen
should assemble here today by 10. Before I could
know it, they have started beating me. They tore my
clothes, collected one of my phones, took two
hundred thousand from the back of my pocket. I do
not tell lies as you can see. It was after much
investigation that they returned the money,” he
lamented in pains.
According to him, those who beat him up are from
Orhionmwon but he cannot identify anyone.

M.I - Talk About It
Jude Abaga, better known by stage name M.I, (Mr.
Incredible) is a Nigerian Hip hop Artist. Jude was
born in Jos Plateau State .Though not much is known
about his upbringing; it is believed that he was an
active participant at a local church choir his father
pastored in Jos.
Jude's venture in the Hip Hop world started with
the sampling of works from DMX and Lauryn Hill as
early as 1998. After his stint at Calvin College,
Michigan, USA, he delved into Poetry while
pursuing a career in Business and Economics.
There, he performed regularly at the school's Hip
Hop concerts. His impressive rap style won him a
third place finish at the Calvin College show tagged
'HipHopera' in 2003. M.I. also made some amateur
attempts at comedy, but decided to stick to music
because he was embarrassed when nobody laughed
but him.
Upon returning to Nigeria in 2003, M.I made his
presence felt in the Nigerian Hip Hop industry
dominated by the likes of Modenine, Ruggedman
and El Dee. He commenced the production of
mixtapes with his friend Djinee. This led to the
critically acclaimed single "Safe", which got
impressive airplay. The hype surrounding the
release of Safe led to the buzz given to his debut
studio album titled “Talk About It”.
M.I's role in the Nigerian music industry cannot be
overstated. MI has done a lot to bring a Northern
presence to the Nigerian music industry, mostly
dominated by southerners. His lyrics are well laced
and quite audible. He currently has a new album
out (which I would be featuring soon). He is the
founder of Loopy Records, and he is signed to

history

Born Helen Folasade Adu on 16 January 1959 in
Ibadan, Nigeria, her father, Adebisi Adu, was a
Nigerian-born economics professor. Her mother,
Anne, was a British nurse. Her parents met while
Adebisi Adu was a graduate student at the London
School of Economics. After marrying and having a
son, the couple moved to Ibadan, where Adu had
landed a teaching job. Sade--a diminutive of
Folasade--was born shortly after their arrival in
Nigeria.
By the time Sade was four, her parents had
separated, and, in 1963, she moved with her mother
and brother back to England. They lived with Sade's
grandparents while her mother finished nursing
school, after which they moved out on their own.
The family eventually settled in a working-class
town called Holland-on-Sea.
At 17, Sade left for London to study fashion and
design at St. Martin's College of Art in the city's
West End. Sade's entry into the music world was by
chance. A popular London funk group called Pride
was looking for a backup singer. She auditioned for
the spot and was initially rejected, but when nobody
better showed up over the next few weeks, Sade was
given the job.
As a backup singer, Sade quickly developed a
following of her own, and at the suggestion of
Pride's manager, she and a few other members of
the band worked up a set of songs to perform
during Pride's between- set breaks, with Sade
taking center stage. Sade and Pride saxophonist
Stuart Mathewman teamed up to write several
catchy songs for the splinter group, and, before
long, the newly-dubbed band Sade was
overshadowing Pride.
Her solo performances of the song "Smooth
Operator" attracted the attention of record
companies and in 1983, she signed a solo deal with
Epic Records taking three members of the band,
Stuart Matthewman, Andrew Hale and Paul
Denman, with her. Sade and her band produced the
first of a string of hit albums. Their debut album
Diamond Life was in 1984. She is the most
successful solo female artist in British history,
having sold over 110 million albums worldwide
Although the gaps between Sade's new projects
seem to be widening, her voice--both as a singer
and songwriter--remains a distinctive one in the
pop music industry. Until a new star emerges who
can out-cool Sade, her periodic reappearances are
likely to be greeted with enthusiasm by her millions
of fans, loyalists of the laid-back. Here is Diamond
Life.........Enjoy!

Wiz Kid - SuperStar
Born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, Wizkid is no doubt
one of the fastest rising artistes in the Nigerian
music industry. A talented singer, songwriter and
performer. He kicked off his singing career at the
early age of 11 when he recorded his first song
with one of Nigeria’s celebrated music icons, OJB
Jezreel. He went on to record a 7-track album,
which he released in his church in Lagos, under the
name of Lil’ Prinz.
Years later in 2006, with a new stage name, and a
passion for making music and God-given talent,
Wizkid got back into the studio to hone his craft. He
continued to develop as a Singer and Songwriter by
working under some of Nigeria’s biggest Musical
names such as OJB Jezreel, Naeto C, Ikechukwu and
many others. Over the next few years his talent as a
Singer and Songwriter became evident and it
resulted in Wiz being prominently featured
alongside some of the biggest Artistes in Nigeria’s
Music Industry to much critical and commercial
acclaim.
2009 would prove to be Wizkid’s break-out year, as
his collaboration with M.I on “Fast Money, Fast
Cars” on the Talk About It album drew major
attention to his distinct voice and singing style. He
went on to feature on Kel’s “Turn by Turn” and also
got signed to Banky W’s Empire Mates
Entertainment, and featured prominently on
Banky’s “The W Experience” album.
At the age of 20, this extremely talented and
charming young man had already achieved so
much, thanks to his drive and focus for turning his
life’s experiences into incredible music. In 2010, he
released his first singles, “Holla at your Boy”
followed by “Gidi Girl” and then there was the hit
song, “Tease Me” which was just a studio freestyle
that got leaked online and turned into a big hit in
different parts of Nigeria and among Nigerians
worldwide.
He reminds me so much of T-pain, with the use of
the auto-tune. He does have a way with words and
very flexible as it is evident in the different genres
he sampled in his album. No doubt his music is
addictive and would grow on you with time. With
catchy choruses and rhythms little wonders why he
has a few club bangers. I would recommend tracks
like “Love My Baby” and “Slow Whine”
Take a listen and tell me what you
think………….. Enjoy!

After spending 22 years in a California prison, Musa Jack Ngonadi, the son of former military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, is back in the country. The 47-year-old son of Gowon was reported to have arrived Nigeria on January 1. According to Naij.com, he was released last year on a state pardon granted by President Barack Obama after spending 22 years in jail. Musa was living in the United States with his mother, the late Edith Ike Okongwu, when he was arrested on November 18, 1992 at the age of 23. Agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the United States Customs Service arrested him for conspiring to import in excess of one kilogramme of heroin. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison for smuggling heroin, although Ngonadi protested vehemently through his legal team that he was innocent and was framed. However, Ngonadi decided being in prison was not the end of life. He enrolled in a university and successfully graduated with a degree in law as a prison inmate. He was also a role model and a legal adviser to all the inmates. He carried himself with dignity and was a source of inspiration to co-inmates who had given up on life. He was rewarded for his good conduct several times by the prison authorities. His family, however, did not relent in their efforts to get him out of prison. Calls for his release began to grow louder and President Obama eventually relented by granting him parole. Ngonadi walked out of Taft Correctional Facility, Bakersfield, California as a free man on November 2, 2015. Just recently, General Gowon said his experience after governing the country showed that Nigeria is not an easy country to lea
